As one of the country’s original Training Schools, we have a proud tradition of developing teachers and leaders and championing workforce development. We believe that investing in people is the most powerful driver of sustainable school improvement, and we are committed to supporting colleagues from initial teacher training through to executive leadership, both within Byrchall High School and across our wider educational partnerships.

Today, we are proud to be a Strategic Partner of the Generate Teaching Hub and work in partnership with Golborne High School to strengthen teacher and leadership development across Wigan and the wider region. Through these partnerships, we play a leading role in delivering the Department for Education’s National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) and Early Career Framework (ECF), across Wigan, providing high-quality, evidence-informed professional development for teachers and leaders at every stage of their career.


Our commitment to developing the profession begins before teachers enter the classroom. Byrchall High School is proud to be represented on the Strategic Board of both Edge Hill University and the Wigan Institute of Education, helping to shape the strategic direction of Initial Teacher Training (ITT). Working alongside schools, higher education institutions and educational partners, we contribute to the recruitment, training and development of future teachers, ensuring they benefit from expert mentoring, high-quality placements and outstanding professional support.

Beyond nationally recognised programmes, we coordinate subject networks across Wigan Local Authority, bringing together curriculum leaders and practitioners to share best practice, engage with educational research and collaborate on curriculum innovation and school improvement. We firmly believe that education is strongest when schools work together, creating opportunities to learn from one another and collectively improve outcomes for children and young people.
