Y8 Project Title: ‘Alimal’
Project Overview: This is an introduction to workshop safety, tools and equipment, students will learn how to use the following tools and equipment safely:
- Junior Hacksaw
- Scriber
- Tin snips
- Metal Vice
- Soft Jaws
- Files (needle, flat, round and half round)
- Pan Former
- Jigs
Students will gain the theoretical knowledge on pure metals, Ferrous metals Non- Ferrous metals, alloys and composite. Students will understand the key characteristics of metals, these include malleability, ductility, hardness, fatigue and strength.
Y8 Project Title: Pencil Holder
Project Overview: This is an introduction to workshop safety, tools and equipment, students will learn how to use the following tools and equipment safely:
- Scroll Saw
- Tenon Saw
- Coping Saw
- Bench Hook
- Marking gauge
- Belt Sander
- Disc Sander
- Laser Cutter
- Techsoft 2D Design
Students will gain the theoretical knowledge of a range of Timbers (Hardwoods, softwoods and manufactured board). Students will understand the key characteristics of a range of timbers and the key characteristics of them.
Y8 Project Title: Pewter
Project Overview: During this unit students will create their own design for a pendant or bracelet charm. They will learn how to:
- Create their own design to a given size
- Make their own mould either by hand or using CAD
- Cast using a low temperature casting unit
- Work safely and understand why the casting process requires specialist personal protective equipment
- Finish and polish metal
- Use a hand punch to create a hole
Students will gain the knowledge of working with metals and be able to explain why metal products are batch produced and the advantages of using moulds in industry.
Y8 Project Title: Pewter

Project Overview: During this unit students will look at the structures and key scientific terminology used to design and manufacture an automaton toy. Students will learn both the theory and practical application of:
- Rotary Motion
- Linear Motion
- Oscillating Motion
- Reciprocating Motion
- Mechanisms
- CAMS and Followers
- Range of Drawing Techniques
Y8 Project Title: Programming and using a Microbit controller to solve problems
Students will be taught how to program a Microbit to experience the many functions that the system offers. They will then develop their programming skills to use the Microbit to solve a range of problems ranging from digital signage and handheld games to security.
Y8 Project Title: World Foods
Project Overview: This is an introduction to foods from around the world. Students will make a variety of dishes from various countries whilst learning about handling raw meat safely and the importance of staple foods across the world. These are the dishes students will make:
- Chicken kebabs
- Sweet and sour chicken
- Chicken curry
- Fajitas
- Quiche
- Macaroni cheese
- Leek and ham risotto
- Calzone
- Chelsea buns
- Victoria slices
- Ham and cheese turnovers with homemade flaky pastry
- Showcase lesson- this is where students will demonstrate the skills they have learnt during their food rotation whilst cooking independently following a recipe.
